calls a recruitment bonanza for al-queda. the state department is ordering u.s. embassies to assess security in case of anti-american violence and a muslim leader is offering to diffuse the situation. >> i said i'll stand with you. i will talk. i will defend you as my neighbor. >> we are not convinced that backing down is right thing. >> imagine a pastor so egotistical he would sacrifice the lives of initialnaries and soldiers to go forward. >> officials urge reverend terry jones to cancel the karan burning. welcome news to many local muslim leaders. terry mcsweeney joins us now with more how local leaders are responding. >> yeah, local religious leaders calling on the reverend jones to not burn the karan but local

muslims a bit shaken by this incident. leaders of faith groups got together in palo alto to urge peace and tolerance. one even had a suggestion that might have been successful had it been brought up a couple weeks ago that the world ignore the karan burning. too late for that. the scheduled event brought back the topic of islamic phobia and that puts muslims on edge before hillary clinton and david petraeus strongly and publicly denounced the book burning. >> two days ago before all these statements surfaced, we were all very scared, very nervous. it was very uncertain. >> those guys are digging in their heels. the reverend jones has no intention of backing down. local organizations say they have no intention backing down either and vowing to increase their show of solidarity. the reverend jones says besides death threats, he also got a lot of encouragement.

>> now 5:02. arson investigators called to the scene of an early morning fire at an apartment complex at 60th street and mlk in oakland. the fire was knocked down quickly. the fire is very suspicion because the same apartment building burned yesterday afternoon. nobody was injured in either fire. five people walked away with only minor injuries after the brakes on a dump truck apparently failed just before plowing into 13 other vehicles in oakland. the driver told investigators he couldn't stop his truck while exiting from eastbound 580 on the grand avenue off-ramp at mcarthur boulevard. the truck crushed a car and shoved it into other vehicles. the driver expressed his regrets after what happened. >> i could get ahold of the people that got hurt and at least say i can say sorry, something. anything, you know. i didn't do it on purpose, you know. but that ruined their day big-time, you know. >> i think that everybody's

really lucky. i think we're fortunate there was nobody in the backseat of the honda or in some of the other cars. i think we were very lucky. >> the truck driver didn't want to give his last name. he's been on the job ten years. authorities haven't revealed his driving record yet. >> highway deaths have fallen to their lowest levels across america in six decades. more than 33,000 people died on america's roads last year. the transportation department points out that represents a little more than 9.5% reduction from 2008. the rate of deaths per 100 million miles driven also fell last year. safety experts credit more people wearing their seat belts, cars with better safety features and keeping drunk drivers off the road with saving those lives. >> 5:05. the california supreme court is refusing to order governor schwarzenegger or attorney general jerry brown to defend proposition 8. prop 8 supporters are appealing the ruling striking down the

measure. both schwarzenegger and brown have refused to back the appeal. the high court did not give a reason for turning down the supporters' request. plans to build an elevated tram to connect bart to the airport is a step closer to construction. the metropolitan transportation commission will allocate $20 million to help build the controversial connector. state and federal agencies are expected to approve the additional $500 million for the project. critics say the tram system is too costly. they're pushing a modified version of the bus system currently in place. >> san francisco international airport has cut a deal with bart to roll back a fare hike for employees. they protested bart's decision to add a c to passengers using the airport station in millbrae. it helped workers by operating a free shuttle bus from the station. the san francisco examiner reports in exchange for dropping the fee for employees, bart will be able to put up advertising at the airport station and pay monthly installments on a $2.5

million annual rent to the airport instead of all at once. >> 75 silicon valley ceo's have stepped up to the plate and signed a letter urging major league baseball to let the oakland a's move to san jose. our media partner reports the letter claims a ballpark in downtown san jose will attract more corporate sponsors for the a's than any other bay area location can. a's face a hurdle because the giants still own the territorial rights to santa clara county. it includes the ceo's of cisco systems, yeah and e-bay. >> today a group of underprivileged kids in contra costa county will get free school supplies. k to college buys supplies for many low income kids but other kids who don't qualify for other

50s from half moon bay to san francisco. low it mid-60s throughout the bay and inland the south bay, east bay and north bay upper 60s. won't be nearly as breezy by 4:00 this afternoon and a little sunnier as temperatures reach the mid to upper 60s around the bay to near 70 in the south bay and low to mid-70s in the north and east bay valleys. about 57 in half moon bay. warm weather on the way. maybe a little above average, especially inland over the weekend where we'll hit the mid-80s, 70s around the bay and afternoon sunshine. a pretty quiet forecast. let's find out if there's anything we need to know trafficwise. >> there's emergency road work going on through oakland. southbound 880 approaching 23rd. the three right lanes might be blocked as late as 5:30 this morning. they thought it would be cleared at 5:00 but now they're saying another 30 minutes. our speed sensors still looking good. if you want to take 880, you'll still be okay. 580 is an alternate. if you're heading out of half

about a two-day event. we're on the back side of it. jet stream pretty progressive. a huge ridge, big trough we're in, moves to the east rather rapidly starting tomorrow. that's when we see our biggest jump in temperatures from day-to-day. low to mid-70s the south bay, los gatos 73. on the peninsula a lot of 60s. maybe 70 menlo park and los gatos. along the coast temperatures upper 50s to near 60 in the sunset. downtown south san francisco, sausalito, san rafael mid to upper 60s with low to mid-70s the north bay valleys to ukiah. sunshine at your beaches. notice fremont, the lone holdout. everybody else mid to upper 60s. partly cloudy conditions inland with temperatures in the low to mid-70s until you get to brentwood. we'll be about 77 degrees. morgan hill, gilroy only cracking 70. otherwise hollister 67, drop to

good morning. it's 5:23. san francisco's annual north beach is so popular, talking about the festival, organizers may have to move it off the grass of washington square park next june. the san francisco examiner reports the event may have to be relocated to the north bound lanes of columbus avenue that run the park. people have complained the large crowds negatively impact the grass and plants of the park. fees for using the park have gone up from $2,000 in 2008 to $23,000 this year because of the care the park requires. >> starting today, tourists from 36 countries will be required to pay an additional $14 to enter the u.s. the purpose of the fee is to fund the promotion of the united states as a tourist destination. the tax was created after numbers showed fewer overseas visitors coming to the u.s. despite increases in international travel overall. >> china is considering relaxes its draconian one-child policy.

international boulevard. -- 44th and international boulevard rather. another group of men drove up. there was some kind of dispute. one of the men who had been eating took out his gun and fired it. there was then a scuffle. someone grabbed the gun from him and shot him dead. both groups then fled the scene a vallejo man free on bail. a judge reduced bail for risen house from $2 million to $25,000 yesterday. police arrested him last week after the bodies of his wife and another woman were found at his home. police charged rittenhouse with possession of explosives and bomb-making chemicals found at the house. prosecutors are trying to determine his involvement, if any, in the debts of the two women. police believe they and another man were killed in a murder spree committed by 38-year-old valdemoro. he was shot and killed by highway patrol after a high-speed chase. the search for a fifth victim has turned up nothing so far at

a pittsburg landfill. >> people feel pretty lucky after a dump truck slammed into their parked cars in oakland. the brakes failed to work as he exited interstate 580 and mcarthur boulevard and grand avenue. five people needed treatment for minor injuries. the impact shook the nerves of many drivers including a 17-year-old girl whose mother rushed to the scene and hugged her. >> that she's not hurt. hugged her so tightly before and used the word miracle. >> the whole way down, all a i can say, oh god. >> the truck driver did not want to reveal his last name. please haven't released his driving record. he's been on the job about ten years. >> a federal appeals court in san francisco dismissed a lawsuit by five men who claimed they were tortured in overseas prisons. involved in the suit against

jefferson data plan aviation company, a subsidiary of boeing. the court ruled the suit would endanger national security secrets. the men including one held at quantanamo claim they were kidnapped by the c.i.a. and flown to secret prisons. >> jefferson was accused of helping in logistics in setting up the flights around the world. that's part of the suit as well. let's check with mike for a look at the weather forecast. >> much drier this morning and a little more clearing but we still have some rain and drizzle we'll talk about. how about that. up on mount diablo. so the highest elevations where the clouds are bumping into the mountains where we're seeing the rain. for the rest of us, pretty dry out there but it is definitely cooler than yesterday. look at the 40s. los gatos, novato, napa, santa rosa. the rest of us the 50s. these temperatures anywhere from 2 degrees cooler like oakland

and livermore, 13 in novato and 11 santa rosa. this compared to yesterday morning. a light jacket may be possible for your wardrobe. temperatures today, the clock under mostly cloudy skies. we'll see gradual increase in sunshine and a gradual decrease in the winds this afternoon. not only will it look warmer, it will also feel warmer this afternoon. mid to upper 50s half moon bay, san francisco. low to mid-60s around the bay and upper 60s inland for lunchtime temperatures. by noon inland, 7 degree temperatures. mid to upper 60s around the bay and 57 half moon bay. accu-weather seven-day forecast, our biggest jump in temperatures will be tomorrow. warm 4 degrees from the coast to inland areas and a couple more degrees of warmth for start and temperatures hold steady through tuesday. >> looking forward to the warmer weather. road work going on and most of the road work usually clears by 5:00 this morning but this one will be out there until 7:00.

rejected a $975,000 offer. a family of 15 has rented that home for the last ten years. even though the city will compensate them to relocate, the family says it has no idea where it will go. san mateo says the 40-year-old fire station will be turn torn down and rebuilt. >> if you get a job with mountain view, you have to get fingerprinted. the city voted to require it for all new hires to be sure they're not leaving off criminal history but the rule exemptings the elected council members. it was argued they should be fingerprinted but they lost out. other bay area cities fingerprint including san jose, sunnyvale and santa clara. >> the biggest cycling event, the an general tour of california but own if they cross the finish ryan in the capital of the silicon valley. the san jose mercury news reports san jose will only accept a stage finish for next year's race planned for may. san jose is the only city that
